Michele Preston, CRFP, has joined the RFMA team as our new Facilities Resource Manager. With nearly a decade of restaurant facilities experience and as a longtime RFMA member, Michele brings a passion for education, relationship-building, and serving the restaurant facilities community. She describes joining the RFMA team as a "full-circle moment" and is excited to give back to the community that has given her so much throughout her career by helping members connect, grow, and get the most out of everything RFMA has to offer. What is your new role at RFMA? 
Facilities Resource Manager!

Tell us a little about your career journey leading up to joining the RFMA team. 
I moved to Louisiana in 2007 and joined Al Copeland Investments as a Service Manager in one of their restaurants. In 2016, when I found out I was going to be a mom, I knew the late nights and demanding restaurant schedule weren't going to be the best fit for my family, so I made the difficult decision to put in my notice.

A few weeks later, I got a call from our VP of the Restaurant Division on a Friday afternoon. She told me a position had opened in Facilities and said she thought I'd be perfect for the role. It was one of those unexpected opportunities that completely changed the direction of my career. I started as a Facilities Coordinator, worked my way up to Facilities Operations Manager, and spent the next several years learning, growing, and building relationships across the industry. 

Along the way, I was introduced to RFMA by one of our vendor partners and never looked back. Education, relationships, and sense of community have had a huge impact on both my career and my life. Now, joining the RFMA team truly feels like a full-circle moment, and I'm excited to help create that same experience for others.

What are you most excited about in your new role?
What excites me the most is that I have the opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so much throughout my career.  As a facilities professional, RFMA was an INCREDIBLE resource for learning, building relationships, and finding people who were always willing to share their knowledge and support.  Now I get to be on the other side of that experience by helping members connect, grow, and get the most out of everything RFMA has to offer. 

Before joining the RFMA staff, you were an RFMA member. How did you first hear about RFMA, and what inspired you to get involved? 
I was introduced to RFMA by Mike Snyder, who has continued to support and encourage my growth over the past five years and remains a strong advocate for me today.  At the time, I was looking for ways to grow in my role, connect with others in the industry, and learn from people who truly understood the work.

The first thing I did as a member was participate in Leadership RFMA(Team Punishers Forever!!) and attend my first conference in Nashville. After the conference, I knew I wanted to be more involved, so I joined a committee, participated in webinars and peer-to-peer calls, and continued to stay engaged in the community. That involvement ultimately led me to earn my CRFP, which was a proud milestone in my professional journey.

What are you looking forward to most during your first 90 days?
During my first 90 days, I’m really looking forward to getting to know the staff, understanding how the association operates, and learning how everything comes together to support RFMA’s strategic plan. I want to quickly get grounded in the work so I can start contributing in a meaningful way and support the team where it matters most.

I’m also especially excited about my first RFMA Gives Project. It falls just outside the 90-day mark, but who’s counting? I’m looking forward to jumping in and being part of that experience.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Faith-Driven, honest, protective. 

Where did you grow up? 
I was blessed to be raised by my grandparents, and my grandfather had an important job that required us to move a lot. While I lived in Baltimore and Florida for shorter periods of time, I spent a much longer period in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and it will always be home for me.

Do you have a favorite sports team?
Yes, I love sports.  I’m a Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, and for college football, I am all about Alabama.  Roll Tide!

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Laundry.


What's your favorite type of food?
Mexican.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to slow down to speed up. I find it helps eliminate mistakes, allows for better decision-making, and helps me move forward with confidence.

When you're not at work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love spending time with my family and friends creating lasting memories.  Concerts, sporting events, traveling, photography, and reading are just a few things that I love.

Leadership RFMA: Program Elements

• Application/Selection Process
  Current RFMA members in good standing can submit an online application form highlighting your leadership background, career goals, and a recommendation/support letter from your manager. Participants will be selected on the basis of merit, potential, and dedication to self-development.
  
  The cost of the program is $325 per accepted participant. This fee will cover all costs with the exception of the Annual Conference registration fee and related expenses. You must be registered for the conference to participate in the 1.5-day workshop that is part of this program. 
  
  
• Online Collaboration Portal
  Participants will engage with each other throughout the year via RFMA's SocialLink collaboration portal where they will review learning content and share/discuss topics of interest.
  
  
• Kickoff Webinar
  The program kicks-off in January with an introductory 2-hour web-workshop where the participants will discover how the program will work and introduce themselves to their fellow participants.
  
  
• Classroom Learning Experience
  Participants take part in a 1.5-day classroom-based learning session held in conjunction with the RFMA Annual Conference in March. The class will provide a deep-dive into the core leadership content and also serve to begin building the relationships between the participants. Teams will be formed that will continue to work together on projects throughout the year.
  
  
• Developmental Assessments
  Participants will take a number of developmental assessments throughout the year to help them learn more about themselves and how they approach leadership. The assessments will serve to paint a picture of who they are and provide developmental paths to increase their leadership capabilities.
  
• Web-Workshops
  Web-workshops (1.5 hour) will be held throughout the year to build upon the learning. They will cover the important themes in leadership development to provide a well-rounded education of advanced content.

• Coaching
  Each participant will have the opportunity to take advantage of a personal leadership coaching session where they will meet by Zoom with the program facilitator to discuss their leadership style and opportunities for developmental growth.
  
  
• Graduation
  After completing the program, the participants will be recognized during the General Session at the following year’s Annual Conference.

• Unaffiliated or retired restaurant professional members are ineligible for the scholarship.

• Applicants must be authorized by their company to travel. Those under travel restrictions are not eligible.
• Applicants must fully complete the online application below.
• A confirmation from each applicant’s direct supervisor stating that this applicant is able to travel and attend RFMA 2026 Annual Conference and needs financial assistance to attend is required.  
  

RFMA 2026 Scholarship Benefits

• 4 education sessions: choose from restaurant specific technical sessions or personal development
• 8.5 hours of Exhibit Hall

RFMA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM & TERMS

As a RFMA member you have the opportunity to nominate up to two Restaurant Brand Professional members and two Vendor Allied members in good standing for our upcoming 2026 Board of Directors election. We have openings for two Directors-at-Large, a Board Alternate and a Vendor Representative.

Each Director-at-Large position will serve a three-year term, the Board Alternate position will serve a one-year term and the Vendor Representative will serve a two-year term. Members who are nominated will be passed onto our Nominating Committees for review.

Help guide our attendees in exploring what’s ahead 🔦 by presenting an education session at our RFMA 2026 Annual Conference, March 15-17th, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

RFMA is looking for engaging sessions that cover a variety of topics including technical and professional development — but most importantly — provide educational value to our attendees.

Ready to Get Started on Your Session?

Below are some helpful education session proposal tips to review.

• Please take the time to submit a thoughtful proposal that clearly articulates the intent of the session. You will be able to start, save and return to your session application at any time before the proposal deadline.
  
  
• As a fellow industry professional, you bring your own experiences and knowledge. When picking a topic, remember you are the subject matter expert and know what type of information needs to be presented to be successful. 
  
  
• We will be looking for a variety of education sessions for RFMA 2026 including:
  
  - Technical Topics
  - Professional development topics
  - Vendor track topics
  
  
• Proposals require clear and concise titles, succinct and persuasive descriptions, and well-thought-out learning objectives/take-aways.
  
  
• Ensure that your education session submission reads well and is grammatically correct. A poorly written submission will be rejected.
  
  
• Sales pitches or product promotion are not acceptable nor appropriate as part of RFMA conference education.
  
  
• We prefer sessions offered in a variety of formats to engage our attendees across sessions. Examples of session formats include:
  • Interviews/fireside chats
  • Lincoln-Douglas debates
  • Roundtable discussions
  • Hands-on workshops
  • Lectures
  • Panel discussions
  • Deep-dive sessions
    
    
• Within your proposal you will be able to select a session length of either:
  • 3-hours
  • 1.5 hours

• Session proposals will be reviewed by RFMA's Conference Curriculum Committee. The committee is looking at the session proposals to see if content is timely, relevant and targets restaurant facilities professionals.

RFMA Committee & Task Force Applications are open from March 3 - March 31. 

Serving on a RFMA Committee:

• Must be a current RFMA member in good standing.
• One-year commitment (recommend serve up to two years on the same committee).
• Work throughout the year on projects that align with RFMA’s mission and strategic plan set by the RFMA Board of Directors.
• Participate in monthly conference calls (up to an hour) and a required in-person meeting at RFMA’s Annual Conference.
• Report to RFMA Board of Directors.
• RFMA members can only serve on one RFMA committee.
• Attendance on a RFMA committee is crucial to the productivity of the committee, each committee member is allotted two excused absences.

Serving on a Task Force:

• Must be a current RFMA member in good standing.
• Report directly to a RFMA committee or RFMA's Board of Directors.
• Committee members may also serve on a Task Force.
• Task Force members may meet in-person at the RFMA Annual Conference alongside the committee they report too.
• Conference Calls and frequency of meetings will be on an as needed basis.

Conference Curriculum Committee

• Reviews and evaluates education feedback from previous RFMA Annual Conference.
• Creates and curates conference curriculum that maximizes attendee engagement and ROI.
• Evaluates and selects signature speakers that can connect to RFMA’s diverse audience.
• Plans and executes education topics that are targeted to all levels of experience of restaurant facility professionals for RFMA’s Annual Conference.
  
• Eligibility Requirement: Attended RFMA’s Annual Conference. New facility managers and senior level management encouraged. Subject Matter Experts needed to review presentations to ensure that content is 100% educational and not a sales pitch.
• Time Commitment: Annual commitment, monthly 1 hour conference calls.
  Additionally:
  June - September: RFMA Annual Conference Proposal Submission
  October: Review and Grade all submitted proposals
  November – January: Work with speakers to finalize their presentations. Each committee member volunteers to review 4 sessions for each conference.
  

Editorial Board

• Composed of RFMA restaurant and vendor members who review editorial submissions for RFMA's official publication, Facilitator.
• Help secure editorial by soliciting for articles for each Facilitator issue.
• Review and set Editorial Calendar each year.
• Share articles on Social Media channels.
• Eligibility Requirement: 15+ years of restaurant facility management experience; a variety of experience is encouraged. Restaurant brand professional members only. 
• Time Commitment: Quarterly meetings. Most Editorial Board communication is sent throughemail.Each Editorial Board member will review, comment and provide constructive feedback on up to 10 articles per issue. There are six issues per year of Facilitator magazine. 
  

Exhibitor Ambassador Committee

• Serves as ambassadors to First-Time Exhibitors,
• Regularly connect with First-Time Exhibitors to ensure they have a successful annual conference experience.
• Create and maintain resources for RFMA Annual Conference exhibitors.
• Host "Know Before You Go" Webinars for First-Time Exhibitors prior to RFMA's Annual Conference.
• Host weekly office hour with RFMA staff leading up to the conference.
• Time Commitment: Monthly calls, meeting with First-Time Exhibitors and development of exhibitor education.
• Eligibility Requirements: Vendor Allied Corporate Members only, must have exhibited at RFMA Annual Conference within the past 3 years and be a current exhibitor.

• Assist with RFMA Interest groups (Emerging Professionals and Females in Facilities) programs and events.

At the same time, he navigated the challenges of multiple personnel changes, often dealing with emergency work to keep restaurants open and in good condition. Sam handled it all like a champion and kept up his happy and calm demeanor through it all. Way to go Sam!

RFMA is looking for a variety of session proposals to be featured at our RFMA 2025 Annual Conference, February 11-13th at the Mandalay Bay Resort, in Las Vegas Nevada. RFMA is looking for sessions that cover a variety of restaurant facilities topics and most importantly provide educational value to our attendees.

Ready to Get Started on Your Session?

Below are some helpful education session proposal tips to review.
All proposals must be submitted electronically by September 6th. 

• Please take the time to submit a thoughtful proposal that clearly articulates the intent of the session.
  
  
• As a fellow industry professional, you bring your own experiences and knowledge. When picking a topic, remember you are the subject matter expert and know what type of information needs to be presented to be successful. Click here for a list of potential education session topics.
  
  
• Proposals require clear and concise titles, succinct and persuasive descriptions, and well-thought-out learning objectives/take-aways.
  
  
• Ensure that your education session submission reads well and is grammatically correct. A poorly written submission will be rejected.
  
  
• Sales pitches or product promotion are not acceptable nor appropriate as part of RFMA conference education.
  
  
• You will be able to select a session length of either:
  o 3-hour in depth Pre-Conference Workshop
  o 1.5 to 2-hour in-depth session, training or workshop
  o 45-minute session
  o 8-minute RIF Talk (RFMA version of TED Talks)
  
  
• All session proposals must be submitted electronically by Friday, September 6th.
  
  
• Session proposals will be reviewed by RFMA's Conference Curriculum Committee. The committee is looking at the session proposals to see if content is timely, relevant and targets restaurant facilities professionals.
  
  
• You WILL NOT be able to submit an incomplete online session proposal.

What is your new staff role at RFMA?   

Facilities Resource Manager

Briefly describe your restaurant facilities journey until starting full-time at RFMA.
I have worked in restaurant facilities for the last 15 years. I started as a technician for K&N Management, brands include Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ and Mighty Fine Burgers, Fries, and Shakes. I worked my way up to manager of facilities and construction for Smokey Mo’s TX BBQ and eventually director of facilities and construction.

What are you most excited about in joining the RFMA staff team?

I am most excited about my new journey helping the RFMA team and facilities managers exceed their team member needs, safety, and giving back to our community.

What are you most nervous about?
I am most nervous about being able to replace Jeff Dover.

You were a RFMA member prior to joining the RFMA staff. How did you initially learn about RFMA and why did you join? 
I initially learned about RFMA from my facilities manager at K&N Management, Jay Andruk, CRFP. I was looking to further my education and knowledge in restaurant facilities. He said, “If I join RFMA, I have to be all in; education, committees, and when attending the convention to look for new products and vendors to help our team grow.”

What are you looking forward to most in your first 90-days on the job? 
I look forward to hearing from my peers on their needs to help them grow.

Where did you grow up? 
I grew up in Gretna, Louisiana, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, Louisiana.

What is the most surprising thing you've learned about the restaurant world? 
The most surprising thing I have learned is how fast equipment breaks!

What is the best advice you ever received? 
Best advice I have received, “Do what you say you’re going to do, WHEN you say you’re going to do It.”

Who is your favorite sports team? 
LSU Tigers!  Geaux Tigers!!!

What chore do you absolutely hate doing? 

I hate doing laundry.

What’s your favorite type of food?

I enjoy boiled crawfish, shrimp, or crabs.
