5 tips to handle disruptive weather events
Restaurant Hospitality
High-impact weather events — hurricanes, floods, tornados — capable of inflicting major damage on restaurants are thankfully few and far between. Much more frequent are violent summer storms that don't produce widespread devastation but still deliver a blow to restaurants that lie in their path. When one of these storms hits, even operations that escape relatively unscathed have plenty to do before they can reopen their doors to the public.

How smart technology can put an end to thermostat wars
By Michael J. Berens
Washington Post columnist Petula Dvorak hit an icy nerve with her recent piece on gender disputes over thermal comfort. "Every single woman I talked to in downtown Washington on a hot, humid July afternoon was thawing out," Dvorak writes. "It's the time of year desperate women rely on cardigans, pashminas and space heaters to make it through the workweek in their frigid offices. And their male colleagues barely notice." It doesn't have to be that way, though, thanks to advances in smart technology.

5 signs your FM team isn't responding to your management style
With so many intangibles to manage on a daily basis, managers of FM teams and other "bosses" can overlook one of the most critical factors to an organization's success; the people. Your team is your support, your ways and means and sometimes your reputation. A good FM team operates cooperatively, keeps the overarching goals in mind and springs to action, when called upon. Can you say the same about your workforce? Are they engaged? Do they ask questions, follow up on assignments or take initiative to go above and beyond?

The key to dramatically reducing overall energy use? Solve the problem of moving air
The largest energy consumers in the world are big buildings. Think of the abundance of lighting fixtures, heating/cooling systems, water heating and refrigeration units demanded of these large buildings and the resulting energy used to power these services over a vast amount of space. The floor space and sheer number of large buildings is constantly increasing to meet population and economic growth which also plays a key role in escalating energy usage. To put this growth into perspective, there will be a 70-80 percent increase in the global urban population in the next 35 years.

EMV credit card deadline: What it means for restaurants
Restaurant Hospitality
The Oct. 1 deadline is rapidly approaching for retailers when the Europay MasterCard and Visa, or EMV, compliance mandate will go into effect. EMV is a standard for credit cards equipped with chip technology now widely used outside the U.S. The chip will eventually replace the magnetic "swipe" strip now commonly used in the U.S. and it is believed to offer a higher level of security against credit card fraud and identity theft.
