Conference Spotlight: Understanding Generational Differences
Join us Monday, March 11, from 3:15-4:45 p.m. for this director-level session. Here is a preview of the session: It can be frustrating trying to understand the four different "generations" working together in today's workforce. Each generation has its own distinct set of values and drivers. You will receive a handout mapping out the differences in the generations. You will also learn some strategies for motivating those that we manage who may not share our same "generational" values and drivers. Being willing to cultivate multigenerational teams is critical to the success of any organization. There are seven strategies to building successful multigenerational teams. We will also discuss the methods for giving feedback for each generation to ensure understanding. And, you will find out the four questions to ask yourself to overcome obstacles to connecting with your multigenerational team. Primary speaker is Lorinda Lewis with Rockhurst University.

Interested in attending this session? Make sure to register for RFMA 2013, March 10-12 at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando, Fla. RFMA members get a special member rate, so make sure to renew your membership and take advantage of the savings today. Visit our conference website and register now!

13 ways to painlessly improve profitability in 2013: Electricity benchmarking
By Jay Fiske
It's said that every journey begins with one step, but that's not actually true because it assumes you know where you are when you begin. This article will help you figure out where the starting line is so you can measure your energy-saving progress. Whether you have one facility or a dozen, the method is essentially the same, although multi-unit operators can take the process one step further by comparing similar units to each other.

Breaking the 7 unwritten rules
Every industry has its unwritten rules for success, a series of do's and don'ts that conventional wisdom suggests are the path to profits. The quick-serve industry is no exception. For decades, companies have operated under a series of assumptions that guide their business decisions and compose their operations manuals. And many of these brands would suggest they've been all the wiser — and richer — by playing by the rules. Now, however, some concepts are breaking the mold, discovering that consumers will still flock to their stores if one or more of the rules aren't followed.

Time to ramp up preparations for health care reform
Today's Facility Manager
American employers should get ready for a host of challenges linked to the ongoing implementation of the Affordable Care Act, said a team of LeClairRyan attorneys focused on helping clients cope with the 2,504-page health care reform package. Key provisions of ACA have already taken effect, with more to come online in 2013. Failure to understand the ramifications of these changes, the attorneys noted, could lead to costly penalties, missed tax credits, time-consuming and expensive litigation, lost opportunities for employees and other adverse consequences.

It's no accident
It's not news to the foodservice industry, but a recent article from the Herman Trend Alert predicted that workplace accidents would be on the rise because employee turnover is on the rise. And when employee turnover is up, employee skill levels are down.
