Help secure the future of RFMA: Submit your recommendation for a new board member
RFMA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We invite you to send us your recommendation for candidates to be considered by our nominating committee to serve as directors-at-large on our 2013 Board of Directors. We are looking for members with a strong background in restaurant facilities, who are leaders as well as team players and strategic thinkers. These candidates should be prepared to commit time and energy to help lead RFMA into the future, but they will get much more in return as they build relationships with other industry leaders. We have openings for three restaurateurs to serve a three-year term. You can recommend up to two people and each must be a current restaurant member in good standing. Click here to access the online recommendation form. You must be logged in to complete the form. Online forms must be submitted by Nov. 19 to be accepted.

Do not hesitate to call Tracy Tomson at 972-805-0905 or email if you have any questions.

A decade of KEV innovation
Facilitator Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Almost every article on the subject of kitchen exhaust ventilation in recent years has concentrated on inspection, fires, cleaning cost or greasy roofs. While all of these areas are of eminent importance, we are missing a great opportunity to increase awareness regarding the many technological advances in energy efficiency and filtration that have occurred in KEV in the last 10 years. Restaurants see sales jump as East Coast looks for food
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Restaurant chains, including Boston Market Corp., Starbucks Corp. and Applebee's, may see a boost in sales as consumers flock to eateries after Hurricane Sandy flooded the East Coast, leaving millions without power. While restaurants may be "hit initially" because of store closings, sales will start picking up as consumers who lost power along the East Coast eat out more frequently, said Stephen Anderson, an analyst at Miller Tabak & Co. in New York. Millennials are eating out less
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Smacked down by the economic downturn, millennials are doing something that no previous generation of 18- to 34-year-olds has done before them: eating out less. Millennials are eating out roughly once a week less than the same age group's eating habits in 2007, according to an eye-opening report from NPD Group. The news is a punch in the gut for $632 billion restaurant industry, which is already struggling. More

An index compiled by the International Franchise Association rose 0.5 percent in September, its second straight monthly gain. The index is also up 2.2 percent from September 2011. The improving economy, including a drop in the unemployment rate to 7.8 percent in September, helped lift the index, according to the IFA. More

QSR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Once a branding premium, going green has become a common business strategy influencing nearly every decision in the manufacturing and retail industries. But many quick-service operators, struggling with tight margins and looking for cost effectiveness, remain hesitant at diving head first into the sustainability movement. More

New green design methods revolutionize building industry
The Vancouver Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For new buildings, sophisticated computer programs such as "energy modeling" are making it easier to predict how much heat and electricity a structure will require — and to review its performance in the months and years after it is completed. Also, as the number of buildings developed through this technology increases, companies will gain access to an ever-increasing bank of data on energy efficient design. More

Growth of rooftop plants defines green building
The Associated Press via San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Spread out in an isolated section of the 400-acre Pride's Corner Farms, a low-key $1 million-a-year operation brings the concept of green building to new heights — rooftops, to be specific. Here on a rolling six acres, exposed to the elements inside low-slung plastic trays, sit drought- and weather-resistant plants that are custom grown for green-roof projects around the country. More
