Restaurant industry job growth hits 17-year high in 2012
The restaurant industry added jobs at double the rate of the overall economy in 2012, and the National Restaurant Association expects this trend to continue in 2013. Eating and drinking places added jobs at a robust 3.4 percent rate last year, the strongest increase in 17 years, according to NRA's analysis of new figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Risky business: The cost of unsafe floors

Unclean and unsafe floors are the cause of approximately 50 percent of slip-and-fall accidents, followed by inappropriate footwear, fraudulent claims, inadequate hazard identification and insufficient employee training. Franchisee drives traffic with digital message boards
Ken Blum, who operates 13 Dunkin' Donuts units in northeast Ohio, installed his first digital message board in 2008. He now has them installed at seven locations. He would add them to all 13 if he could, but the other six units are located in municipalities that have restrictions on such displays. Zoning restrictions are the only disadvantage Blum can think of about the boards – while the advantages, he said, start with reaching 25,000 people every day.

Technology and FM: Integrating security systems

A facility manager who had just completed the installation of a comprehensive security system for a very large corporate campus shared some insights recently. This install included a biometric access control system, more than 100 security cameras (some with video analytics), a perimeter intrusion system (this is a high-security campus) and license plate recognition. While happy with the new capabilities of all these systems, this manager had also encountered an unexpected challenge: information overload.
