Best Practices Articles Needed

ADA Compliance

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 caused a tremendous amount of facility changes within our industry. It was long overdue and was designed to make all public facilities accessible to everyone. Our industry spent a huge amount of money to make the necessary changes and upgrades to enable the disabled to freely enter and use the restaurants. There is still pressure to ensure all facilities meet ADA guidelines. No one wants to have a lawsuit filed against them. With this in mind and the time of the year when FM's are out in the field surveying their stores for the 2016 budget, it may be a good time to complete a quick review of the facilities while preparing the Capital and R&M project lists. The four(4) areas for focus are: parking, entrances, dining areas, and restroom. Obviously, this Blog will not be able to list all specifications but be on the lookout for the following:


- Must be 1 accessible spot for each 25 spaces

- Accessible spaces must be at least 8 ft. wide

- Proper Accessible signage present?

- Must at least 1 clear travel route to the entrance and at least 36" wide with no bumps and/or holes.

- If there is a curb, must have ramp.

- Ramp must be at least 36" wide


-Single door entrance minimum open door width is 32"

- Beveled edges on bottom of the door must be 3/4" or less

- Door handle maximum height is 48"

- Door should be easy to open using a closed fist

Dining Areas

- Service/utensil counters no higher than 34" AFF

- Checkout counter no higher than 36"

- Minimum aisle width between tables is 36"

- Dining tabletops maximum height is 34"


- Proper signage present?

- Proper space in stalls?

- Grab bars present? Maximum installed height is 36" AFF.

- Accessible urinal maximum height is 17"

- All flush mechanisms maximum height is 44" AFF

- Sinks/countertops max height is 34"

- All faucets must have controls that can be operated with one(1) hand

There are numerous additional items to review but it's important when at the restaurant to be on constant watch for non-ADA compliance. It's good business and the right thing to do.
