We are very excited about some recent changes we
have made to our committee structure that will offer more volunteer opportunities and help you find a volunteer position that fits your interests. The truth is, we cannot do what we do without the involvement of our members and I believe you do not fully reap the benefits of your membership without getting involved!

Seven years ago as a second year restaurant facilities manager, I attended my first RFMA conference and I was instantly hooked. I made immediate connections with many members I met there and I was sure that being a part of RFMA would improve how I performed in the restaurant facilities field. At that first conference I realized that to get the greatest professional benefit out of my membership I had to get involved in some way. Because an annual conference, while fantastic, was not enough to make a true connection.

Getting involved was not at all difficult to do; it simply required asking myself, “What are my interests?” and asking the staff, “What can I do to help?” Wanting personally to focus on the career development benefits offered by RFMA, I first joined the Education Committee and played a role in developing conference curriculum and other learning tools. While I was not on-board early enough to be part of development of the CRFP exam, I was also chomping at the bit to be one of the first to become certified. So I volunteered to take the Beta exam and was thrilled when I passed to earn my CRFP designation!

I have definitely seen the value of getting engaged by volunteering and how it has helped me to learn and grow in my personal life and career. Because of this involvement, I have had the good fortune of being elected to the Board of Directors and then honored to become Chairman this year. At the same time I saw my professional career grow as I moved from a Facilities Manager 7 years ago to my current position as Executive Director of Facilities.

If you are serious about a long-term career in restaurant facilities or are a Vendor who wants to build relationships with existing or prospective customers, I can recommend no better avenue for success than volunteering to serve on a committees and staying actively involved in RFMA all year long.
