Invest in RFMA 2013

Posted By Heather Webb, RFMA, Thursday, March 22, 2012

I am very excited to announce my next guest blogger Jack McNertney with DARDEN to recap his and DARDEN's experience at RFMA 2012 held in Las Vegas.  DARDEN was one of the 5 restaurant companies involved in the development of RFMA, participating on the original founding committee. Jack McNertney, who at the time was the Director of Facilities & Asset Management for YUM! Brands, served on the very first Board of Directors, was the Chairman of the Board in 2008, and was awarded the first MVP Award in 2011 for his dedication and service to RFMA. Enjoy!

Our team made it home safe and sound from the most recent Conference held in Las Vegas. The turnout of Restaurateurs, Vendors and Exhibitors reached an all-time high for RFMA. Congratulations to everyone for making this conference the best ever. Tracy, Debi, Jennifer and Heather, the RFMA Staff, did a wonderful job and special kudos to Kim Sackett and Barb Hill, who once again, worked their magic with the Convention Center, Hotel and special events. It’d been a few years since I last polled our team to gather feedback on the Conference. This year we had 46 team members in attendance and they all came away with new contacts to help them support our portfolio of restaurants.

Attached is a sampling of the survey feedback:

· Impressed by the big turnout this year.

· Enjoyed meeting all the new as well as previous exhibitors

· Loved the educational sessions

· Appreciated the opportunity to network with all attendees.

· 82% felt the sessions were "very or extremely” valuable

· 84% felt the exhibit hall mirrored the above ratings

· 85% would like to attend next year’s Conference

· 95% stated they met a vendor(s) that they will probably do business with that is new to their vendor base

The last bullet point alone states why you should send your team and why Vendors should participate. I can’t think of a better venue to capture the spirit of renewing old friendships, creating new ones, and developing partnerships you can take home and build upon. I believe the Conference is a tremendous value for the investment and I hope to see you all next year in Orlando.

Senior Director, Facilities
DARDEN

Thanks Jack for sharing you and DARDEN's story!

Committees, Conference and Connections...

Posted By Heather Webb, RFMA, Monday, February 13, 2012

We are currently counting down the days to RFMA 2012 and I am excited to announce my next blog guest Roger Goldstein from Panda Restaurant Group. Roger has been an active part of RFMA serving on the Education committee and is an incoming RFMA Board Member for this year. Roger shares in his post the success he has found through RFMA and the RFMA annual conference. Enjoy!

Having gone from being a small local service vendor to working for a national restaurant chain I was fairly naive when it came to an expanded view of facilities and connecting with what peer companies do in their facilities departments. RFMA solved this the minute I attended my first conference in 2009, I was energized and ready to get involved and learn more. Joining the education committee gave me a chance to see firsthand all the opportunities there are for our industry to grow and learn from each other and thru educational sessions at the conference.

Listening and learning from experienced peers in facilities has been invaluable in my growth and I encourage every member to get involved and go out and share what you know with others.

The RFMA conference also gave me the chance to see innovative technology and meet potential business partners in our vendor members, leading to great relationships.

Director, Facilities

Thanks Roger for sharing your RFMA story!

Make sure RFMA is in your tool box

Posted By Heather Webb, RFMA, Wednesday, February 01, 2012

My next blog post comes from our neighbor here at RFMA, Pizza Hut. Joseph and the Pizza Hut team have been active RFMA members from the start and have graced our Facilitator magazine cover this past August/September. Their cover story gave great insight into the innovate things that Pizza Hut is doing behind the scenes. Joseph would like to share his and Pizza Hut's RFMA experience and share the benefits they have seen from being RFMA members.

The Pizza Hut Facility Team have all been members of RFMA from inception. The benefits it provides grows exponentially as RFMA grows. You could look at RFMA as just another tool in your tool box to assist you with your personal development as well as developing your facility business for your company. You have numerous members to help you benchmark, to seek expertise and experience and to build your vendor bench. You may not utilize this resource every day, but it is their when you need it. It is also a way for you to "give back” and share your expertise with other members.

THANKS............

Joseph Sciortino
Pizza Hut
Director of Facility Management
Field Operations

Thanks Joseph for sharing you and Pizza Hut's RFMA story!

Danze and Chism are Here to Stay

Posted By Heather Webb, RFMA, Thursday, January 19, 2012

I would like to introduce my next blog post guest writer, Eli Danze with The Chism Company. Eli has been an active member of RFMA serving as Chair of the Membership Retention Committee. Along with leading his committee, Eli also is a social media guru who is constantly spreading news and success stories about RFMA through all channels of social media. Here are some thoughts that Eli wanted to share about his and The Chism Company's RFMA experience.

Invited by a few customers to join RFMA three years ago. Involvement with the association is a long-term investment for The Chism Company. As opposed to conferences or associations where being involved over a three day period may bring short term gains, it may take multiple years to build a working relationship with RFMA members. However, this creates the opportunity to enjoy long-term success over a five to ten to twenty year period.

Business may be completed remotely every day, but when you have the opportunity to take business to a face-to-face personal level, building a relationship begins. Chism management and team members made an investment decision to join RFMA three years ago, and we proudly came home from the RFMA 2010 Conference with the New Member of the Year Award!!

Proudly supporting RFMA and its membership, we at Chism Company are here to stay.

Gordon Goes the Distance

Posted By Heather Webb, RFMA, Thursday, January 12, 2012

My next blog post comes from another supporter of RFMA, Gordon Bruner with VMC Facilities. Gordon has been with RFMA from the beginning in 2005 and has been an enthusiastic supporter and active committee member since then. Gordon has many success stories through RFMA and he wanted to share some of his thoughts and one recent story below.

Good morning folks. I want to share some thoughts on RFMA. I have been a member since the beginning and my company has more than doubled in size and that for the most part has been because of RFMA. The first couple of years were slow but it takes time to build relationships and gain peoples trust. I think some people expect too much to quick. To win at this you need to get involved. I spend a lot of time doing committee work and that builds relationships with folks. When you are working side by side with people in our industry to make RFMA better, you do build trust and get a good reputation with people. All that hard work pays off! If you do your part and do the right things for RFMA you will WIN! Looking forward to seeing everyone in VEGAS!

Small example, 2 weeks ago one of my RM's got a call out of the blue from a gentleman at a restaurant company that he had meet last year at the conference. He needed help with a big issue. We got him all fixed up and now we have a new customer, not to mention we got 15k worth of work out of the call!

Life is good!!

Gordon Bruner

Thanks Gordon for sharing your RFMA story!

Starbucks Sees Savings

Posted By Heather Webb, Wednesday, January 04, 2012

To start off this blog I would like to spotlight Bob Schreiber with Starbucks Coffee. Bob has been a RFMA member since 2006 and continues to be an avid supporter of RFMA. Over the years, Bob has had several success stories about connecting with other RFMA members and wanted to share one of these stories. One connection Bob made with a RFMA vendor member helped bring Starbucks Coffee major savings over the last two years. Below Bob talks about this connection story along with some of the benefits from attending RFMA's annual conference.

· One of the benefits we have received is cost savings of over $100K in each FY10 and FY11. Savings originated from sourcing low cost vendors with high expertise, finding new products, technology and services from both new and existing vendors, ideas from sessions and relationships from external Starbucks peers. Lightstat was one vendors who we meet years ago and encouraged them to display their products to Corporate, which they did.

· Another benefit from the convention is the knowledge the FSMs and FRs obtained from the conference. This is part of their PDPs. The sessions are a mix of technical and soft skills. This has helped the growth of the FSMs and their thought process. Last year some of the FSMs became facilitators for the facility roundtables. And Starbucks now has FSMs on the Education and Recruitment committees. One FSM has gone from NI to AE in two years in part to his RFMA learning.

· The third major benefit of attending is gaining an external peer group. The external peer group allows the FSMs to understand other methods of doing facility work. This leads to new tools and ways to improve Starbucks facilities. If we do not encourage dialogue with external peers there is possibility we may fall behind in effective ways in facility management. The convention has a breakout session that divides attendees into regional groups so you can meet their peers in their geographical area. There are meetings after the convention for the groups to continue dialogue. The FSMs meet external peers in the sessions and as they tour the vendor trade show.

Thanks Bob for sharing your RFMA story!
