Summary: The “Internet of Things” (IoT) is a term coined in 1999 to describe the use of embedded sensors and communication tools to enable equipment interconnection, real-time data transmission and analysis, and intelligent decision-making. While this may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, IoT is actually proliferating in settings as diverse as home automation (think Nest, the new Apple Homekit, etc.), health (such as wearables like Fitbit), transportation (like the Progressive Snapshot), and even in restaurant facility management.
