Around dinner time Saturday, Feb. 22, servers and other workers at a Legal Sea Foods on Long Island started to worry when their manager disappeared for at least an hour. Co-workers searched the manager's basement office and the rest of the floor, banging on a locked bathroom door, staff members and officials said. When assistant manager Megan Smith passed out during the search, the workers knew something was very wrong.

'Well-organized' thieves target restaurants' used kitchen grease

It can't be eaten or reused, but kitchen grease is fueling a major crime spike in Southern California. Much like copper, inedible kitchen grease, or IKG, has a commodity value and a full truck load of the used cooking oil could fetch as much as $600 at a grease recycling center.
