Carly Wohlers will be serving as our membership coordinator at RFMA. She is a graduate of Texas A&M — whoop! — where she played soccer, did a semester abroad in Sweden and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in marketing. Carly comes to RFMA with a strong background in account management and customer service, and she looks forward to meeting everyone at the RFMA 2013 Annual Conference in March. She will be spending the next few weeks getting acclimated and will be working with Heather Webb during this time to make sure that all members' needs are satisfied. We invite members to send Carly an email welcoming her to RFMA. Carly can be reached at Carly@rfmaonline.com or 907-805-0905 ext. 103.

Debi Kensell    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 2010, RFMA began a partnership with Don Fisher and Richard Young at the Food Service Technology Center to develop and present content at our annual meeting. Now we can't imagine a conference without them. When it comes to restaurant energy efficiency, they are the industry gurus. Their passion for research and their excitement for sharing that information are transforming the way restaurants consider equipment efficiency. More

 INSIDE THE INDUSTRY

Fast-food eateries cooking up fresh looks
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Facelift fever is sweeping the fast-food industry as aging establishments swap ketchup-smudged Formica for mood lighting and gleaming stainless steel — all in the pursuit of profit. In a tough economy, picky consumers are being selective about where they spend their cash. Many tired outlets are losing sales to flashier competitors, experts said, forcing them to spruce up or lose out. More

Energy Manager Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is that all there is to our new advancing convergence of utility and service markets for the homemaker and small business owner — lights, thermostats and locks? First of all, why lights? Doesn't anyone understand that lighting is one of the lesser users of energy in the home or small business? Yet whenever we see a discussion on the topic, lighting seems to be an important part of any program. More

Policy and incentives drive energy efficiency retrofits
GreenBiz.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Energy efficiency retrofits to existing commercial and public buildings represent a rapidly growing market that will benefit building owners, tenants, communities, and the environment. While most energy efficiency retrofits take place because the building owner is looking to reduce energy costs, government policy is a growing influence. More

The burger chain's recent push into home delivery is part of a larger effort to move from fast-food straggler to industry frontrunner. More

Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Starbucks Corp plans to increase the number of its cafes in the Americas by more than 20 percent by opening more than 3,000 new shops there in the next five years as it looks to rely on tea and juice as much as coffee, it said. The world's largest coffee chain is also finished with acquisitions for now, after buying juice seller Evolution Fresh for $30 million and Bay Bread LLC's La Boulange Bakery for $100 million over the last 13 months. Size matters for soda makers, restaurants facing NYC ban
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Soda makers and restaurants say they will face daunting logistical hurdles such as needing to retool manufacturing, change distribution systems and even introduce new plastic cups if New York's ban on large-size sweet drinks in food outlets survives a legal challenge. The ban, the first of its kind in the nation, is due to take effect in March and would prohibit sugary soft drinks larger than 16 ounces from being sold in restaurants, movie theaters and food carts.
