RFMA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We invite you to send us your recommendation for candidates to be considered by our nominating committee to serve as directors-at-large on our 2013 board of directors. We are looking for members with a strong background in restaurant facilities, who are leaders as well as team players and strategic thinkers. These candidates should be prepared to commit time and energy to help lead RFMA into the future, but they will get much more in return as they build relationships with other industry leaders. We have openings for three restaurateurs to serve a three-year term. You can recommend up to two people and each must be a current restaurant member in good standing. Click here to access the online recommendation form. You must be logged in to complete the form. Online forms must be submitted by Nov. 19 to be accepted.

Do not hesitate to call Tracy Tomson at 972-805-0905 or email if you have any questions.

Sandy offers lessons to restaurateurs
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For many of New York City's 24,000 restaurants, the work after Hurricane Sandy has just begun: a long-term overhaul that could change much about the way restaurants operate, even those untouched by the storm. Owners are re-examining their buildings' infrastructure and architecture. They are questioning their industry's tradition of placing kitchens and refrigerators in basements. For the first time, many are realizing a need to set up backup power, communication systems and transportation networks. More

8 simple rules for renovation
QSR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Largely in an effort to keep stores fresh and relevant in an era of heated competition, brands big and small — from McDonald's and Wendy's to Togo's and TCBY — are rolling out remodeled restaurants. Alongside menu, value, customer service and convenience, store environment has gained increased traction as a critical business element. Companies intent on executing a systemwide remodel can follow eight guidelines to enhance franchisee cooperation, excite operators and ultimately be successful. More

Restaurants find that upscale food, not deals, lures diners
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During the recession, offering deals on meals was key to getting patrons into restaurants. These days, that may no longer be the case. Combo packages and value menus don't have the same allure for customers that they had in the downturn, according to research company NPD Group Inc. Deal-driven traffic has declined over the last two years, while the number of consumers paying full price has increased 1 percent each year. The situation was reversed three years ago. More

Selecting and using the right power supply is an important aspect of ensuring that the installed security system delivers the desired outcome and of course, a good ROI. More

Why a restaurant's design is as important as the food
Business Insider    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the new era of fusion cooking and globe-trotting chefs, what makes or breaks a restaurant is not necessarily the food. It's the design. After all, it's the architect's decision on things like decor, lighting effects and where to place the kitchen that can mean the difference between an enjoyable dining experience or not. More

McDonald's posts rare sales drop, promotions questioned
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
McDonald's first monthly global restaurant sales decline in nine years is likely to force the world's biggest hamburger chain to increase promotions for its value menu, but some analysts doubt whether a hyper focus on low prices is the right strategy. The loss of customers to rival chains such as Burger King and Taco Bell is a huge test for CEO Don Thompson, who took over in July when the chain was enjoying a multiyear run of rising sales and profits. Wendy's aims to accelerate remodels after Q3 sales lift
Nation's Restaurant News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Wendy's Co. reported a large net loss in the third quarter as it paid down debt, but investments in its "Image Activation" remodeling program have the brand confident it will achieve its growth targets for 2012 and accelerate those plans next year. Much of the brand's focus during its third-quarter earnings call was its re-imaging program, which chief executive Emil Brolick said would give Wendy's credibility to offer a fast-casual-like experience at quick-service pricing and would allow the brand to grow sales and earnings in the future.
